By Gordon Byrd KEY LARGO -- A Florida professor is setting a record Saturday for living underwater. Joseph Dituri with the University of South Florida has been living in a 100-square-foot underwater room at the Undersea Lodge in Key Largo since February, with no sunshine or home-cooked meals. Dituri is aiming to spend 100 days underwater. He says he hopes his research will allow him to help people with traumatic brain injuries, through the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy Instead of a regular atmospheric pressure, hyperbaric medicine uses 100 percent oxygen at elevated pressure.
